Self Priming Pumps

Large range of quality self priming water pumps

Priming a pump is necessary for most centrifugal pumps to remove air before operation. Trapped air can cause a pump to become air-bound, preventing it from working properly and causing damage.

So what is a Self Priming Pump? Self priming pumps are centrifugal pumps with the ability to clear air from the suction line by mixing it with liquid in the pump body. The benefit of this is that it removes the necessity for manual priming or a separate priming system, meaning maintenance is easier for industrial and commercial applications.

It is important to understand that self priming pumps cannot operate without water and upon installation may require manual priming. After this the pumps operate by retaining a small volume of liquid in the casing which is then discharged along with any excess air when the pump is switched on. A non return valve is usually fitted to stop water being lost when the pump has stopped. If you’re concerned about this, our Jabsco Utility Pumps come with built in protection against dry running which can last up to 30 minutes.

Types of Self Priming Pump

Typically there are two types of self priming centrifugal pumps:
1. Open impeller self priming pumps e.g. EPA pumps, which are used for pumping liquids with soft solids.
2. Closed impeller self priming pumps e.g. Lowara BG, Ebara JESX, Ebara JEX & Ebara AGA/AGC, which are used to extract clean water from underground tanks and shallow wells.

Our water pumps are constructed from high grade materials such as corrosion resistant stainless steel, bronze, and cast iron to suit different purposes. This means we have self priming pumps to suit a whole range of applications, including sewage tank emptying, water drainage, pressure boosting, and irrigation.
